GTA 6 Lets Jason and Lucia Hang Out, Work Out and Commit Crimes Together

Rockstar has designed GTA 6 around more than simply switching between Jason and Lucia. New details about the game reveal that the two protagonists can spend time together throughout the open world, including working out, committing crimes and escaping the police as a couple.

Jason and Lucia can experience activities throughout Leonida together, including robberies and workouts.

Recent reporting and interviews with Rockstar developers have provided new insight into how Jason and Lucia's relationship works during regular gameplay, not just during story missions.

Here's what has been revealed and what it could mean for GTA 6 Story Mode.

Jason and Lucia can hang out together

Jason and Lucia aren't limited to interacting during scripted story missions.

Players can spend time with the other protagonist throughout GTA 6's open world. While controlling one character, you can meet up with the other and experience activities around Leonida together.

One example shown during a gameplay demonstration had Jason and Lucia walking together through a park while talking about their past.

That suggests their relationship can continue developing outside the main missions rather than existing only during cutscenes.

Jason and Lucia can work out together

The pair can also visit the gym together.

Rockstar has confirmed that gyms return in GTA 6, with exercise affecting attributes such as muscularity and strength. When Jason and Lucia visit together, both characters can work out at the same time.

In one demonstration, Lucia used a treadmill while Jason performed squats.

It's a small detail, but it shows how Rockstar is integrating the relationship between the two protagonists into everyday open-world activities.

You can commit crimes together

Jason and Lucia's activities aren't limited to hanging out and working out.

Players can also commit robberies with both protagonists together.

Rockstar has described robbery targets as an important part of GTA 6's gameplay loop, giving players ways to make money between story missions.

These robberies can be attempted alone or with Jason and Lucia working together.

The second protagonist can also help during escapes. In some situations, one character can drive while the player controls the other, allowing you to shoot at pursuing police while your partner handles the getaway.

That could make free-roam crime feel much closer to a scripted mission, even when you're simply exploring Leonida.

Their relationship can affect the story

Rockstar has also revealed that spending time together can help maintain Jason and Lucia's relationship.

The two remain partners in crime throughout much of the story, but how much the player nurtures their romantic relationship can have an impact on how their story plays out.

That means hanging out together isn't necessarily just cosmetic.

Rockstar appears to be giving players some influence over Jason and Lucia's relationship while still keeping the central story focused on the pair working together.

Rockstar wanted GTA 6 to feel like a game about a couple

The system is an important part of how Rockstar has approached GTA 6's two protagonists.

Rather than creating two characters who mostly live separate lives, Rockstar has developed systems that allow Jason and Lucia to experience the open world together.

Both characters also have their own routines. When you're controlling one protagonist, the other isn't necessarily waiting at a safehouse for you to switch back.

This should help Jason and Lucia feel like two people living in the same world rather than simply two characters controlled by the player.

What we already know about Jason and Lucia

Rockstar has revealed considerably more about both protagonists ahead of release.

Jason Duval grew up around criminals and later spent time in the Army before finding himself working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys.

Lucia Caminos learned to fight from her father and eventually spent time in Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family. After getting out, she's determined to change her circumstances and pursue a better life.

Rockstar's official description of GTA 6 says an easy score goes wrong, pulling Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida and forcing them to rely on each other more than ever.

What This Means for GTA 6

The ability to spend time with Lucia or Jason outside missions could make GTA 6's dual-protagonist system fundamentally different from GTA V.

Rather than simply switching between characters who largely live separate lives, Jason and Lucia can share parts of the open world together.

That gives Rockstar opportunities to develop their relationship without relying entirely on traditional cutscenes. Conversations while driving, exercising, walking around Leonida or escaping police could reveal more about the characters naturally while the player continues playing.

The ability for your partner to drive during a getaway could be particularly useful. Being able to switch seats and focus on shooting at pursuing police could create spontaneous moments that feel much closer to handcrafted missions.

And because Rockstar says nurturing Jason and Lucia's relationship can affect how their story plays out, these activities may have consequences beyond simply providing something else to do in the open world.

Exactly how significant those consequences will be remains unknown.

But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Jason and Lucia's relationship isn't just part of GTA 6's story. Rockstar has built gameplay systems around it.
