GTA 6 Preload in Australia: Date, Time, Download Size & How to Preload
You can preload GTA 6 from Thursday, November 12, 2026, one week before launch. That applies to digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and to the physical edition, which is a download code in a box. Rockstar has confirmed the date. It hasn't confirmed what time preloading opens, and it hasn't announced the download size.
For Australia, the best clue is the Australian PlayStation Store, which promises a "7-Day Pre-load" before a 12am AEDT launch on November 19. Count back seven days and preloading should open at about 12am AEDT on Thursday, November 12 (9pm on Wednesday in Perth). That's our reading of the store listing, not an announcement, and we'll update this page as soon as an official time appears.

Both editions preload the same way. The Australian PlayStation Store lists the 7-day preload for the Standard Edition (AUD 129.95) and the Ultimate Edition (AUD 159.95), and the Xbox Store lists the same prices. What time does GTA 6 preloading start in Australia?
No one has announced a time. Our estimate comes from the Australian PlayStation Store listing:
- The Australian PlayStation Store lists GTA VI's release as 1pm UTC on November 18, which is 12am AEDT on November 19.
- The same listing says both editions include a "7-Day Pre-load".
- Seven days before that moment is 12am AEDT on Thursday, November 12. That's also the date Rockstar gave.
If that's right, preloading opens at 12am in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, 11:30pm in Adelaide, 11pm in Brisbane, 10:30pm in Darwin and 9pm in Perth, with the last four on Wednesday, November 11. Xbox hasn't shown a preload time at all, so Xbox players should check from the morning of November 12.
You don't have to start the second it opens. You get a full week, and the download will be quicker on a quiet weekday than on launch night.
How to preload GTA 6 on PS5
- Buy it. Pre-order the digital version on the PlayStation Store. If you bought the physical edition, open the PlayStation Store, select the "..." menu at the top of the screen and choose Redeem Code.
- Turn on automatic downloads. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download.
- Let it download in rest mode. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Check the pre-order. From November 12, go to your Game Library, select GTA VI and select the countdown timer. Every item with a ticked box will download automatically.
- Watch progress. Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads to see how far it's got.
PlayStation says a countdown timer appears on pre-ordered games in your library, and that's what turns into the Play button at launch.
How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
- Buy it. Pre-order in the Microsoft Store on your console, in the Xbox app, or on the Xbox website. For a physical edition code, open the Microsoft Store on your console and choose Redeem.
- Keep games up to date. Go to Settings > System > Updates and turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.
- Use Sleep mode. Go to Settings > General > Power options and choose Sleep, so the console can download while it's off.
- Start the install. From November 12 the game should start downloading automatically. If it doesn't, open My games & apps > Full library, find GTA VI and select Install.
- Install from your phone. The Xbox app can send the install to your console remotely, as long as the console is in Sleep mode.
Microsoft's own documentation says pre-ordered games can be downloaded before release but can't be launched until the release time.
Can you preload GTA 6 with a physical copy?
Yes. GTA 6's physical edition doesn't contain a disc. Rockstar says the box holds a download code, and that physical copies will be on sale from November 12 "to support pre-loading". Redeem the code (steps above) and the game downloads like a digital copy.
That also means a physical copy won't save you any download time, and it won't unlock any earlier. If a retailer delivers your box before November 19, you can redeem it and preload, but you'll still be waiting for the launch time like everyone else.
How big is GTA 6?
Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft haven't published a file size, and neither Australian store listing shows one as of October 27, 2026. This is how to read the numbers going around:

For comparison only, GTA V's current-gen version is about 87GB on PS5 and 94GB on Xbox, according to store data reported by Forbes and GTA Intel. Those are different games, so they tell you nothing certain about GTA 6. If you want a safety margin, clearing 200GB or more is a sensible buffer, not a prediction.
How much free space your console really has
Consoles reserve part of their drive for the system, so the advertised size isn't what you can use:

Usable figures are as reported by Stevivor and TechRadar. Check your own free space under Settings > Storage on either console. Series S owners with lots installed are the most likely to need a clear-out.
How long will the preload take?
It depends on your connection and the final size. As a rule of thumb, a 100 Mbps connection moves about 45GB an hour at full speed, so a 150GB download would take a bit over three hours in perfect conditions. We've worked out the times for every common NBN speed in our GTA 6 download time table.
GTA 6 preload not starting? Check these first
- Has preloading opened yet? If our time estimate is wrong, the store may open preloading later on November 12.
- Did you pre-order the digital version? A physical pre-order from a retailer can't preload until you have the code.
- Has the payment gone through? Check your PlayStation or Microsoft account's transaction history.
- Are automatic downloads on? If not, start it manually from your game library.
- Is there enough free space? The download won't start without it.
- Are the networks up? Check the official PlayStation Network or Xbox status page before you start changing settings.
GTA 6 preload FAQ
Does the Ultimate Edition preload earlier? No. On the Australian PlayStation Store, both editions list the same 7-day preload.

Can I preload on PS4 or PC? No. GTA 6 isn't coming to PS4, and no PC version has been announced.
Will there be a launch-day update? Rockstar hasn't said. Leave automatic updates on so anything released before launch downloads in the background.
