How to Play GTA 6 Early: Every Method Checked, Including What Doesn't Work

There's no official way to play GTA 6 early. No edition includes early access, the Ultimate Edition adds in-game content rather than an earlier start, and there's no beta. The earliest legitimate way for a normal player is simple: buy the game before November 12, preload it, and play the moment your region unlocks. In Australia, that's 12am AEDT on Thursday, November 19, 2026, and Perth players get in at 9pm the night before.

The famous "New Zealand trick" can move you a little earlier, but for Australians it's two hours at best, and it costs more than it's worth. Below is every method people are talking about, and whether it works.

The earliest legitimate way to play GTA 6

GTA 6 unlocks country by country, starting at midnight in New Zealand and finishing in the Americas about 19 hours later. Australia is second in line. Based on the Australian PlayStation Store's release timestamp, the game unlocks at 12am AEDT on November 19 across the whole country. That works out to 11:30pm in Adelaide, 11pm in Brisbane, 10:30pm in Darwin and 9pm in Perth on Wednesday, November 18. We've got the full unlock times for every Australian capital.

To be playing in the first minute:

Buy before November 12. Pre-order digitally on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, or buy the physical edition, which goes on sale November 12.
Preload. Rockstar says digital pre-orders can preload from November 12. We've written up how to preload GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox.
Check your space and speed. The size hasn't been announced, so see how long the download will take on your connection.
Stay online at unlock time. Your console needs to reach PlayStation Network or Xbox network to confirm the game has unlocked.

Is there official GTA 6 early access?

No. Rockstar's pre-order announcement covers the release date, the Standard and Ultimate Editions, the Vintage Vice City Pack, a month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders and preloading from November 12. Nothing in it mentions playing before November 19.

Xbox does support early-access bundles for some games. Microsoft's documentation describes them, but GTA 6's Xbox listing doesn't include one.

Does the Ultimate Edition get early access?

No. On the Australian PlayStation Store, the Standard Edition (AUD 129.95) includes the game, the Vintage Vice City Pack, a month of GTA+ and a 7-day preload. The Ultimate Edition (AUD 159.95) adds the "Ultimate Edition Upgrade", and nothing else changes, including the preload. Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition as extra vehicles, weapons, apparel and story content, not early play.

Is there a GTA 6 beta?

No. Rockstar hasn't announced a public beta, playtest or demo. Emails or sites inviting you to a "GTA 6 beta" are phishing, which security firms have been warning about since mid-2026 (more on that below).

The New Zealand trick, explained

New Zealand is the first country to get GTA 6, at 12am NZDT on November 19. That's 11am UTC on November 18, or 10pm AEDT on Wednesday. The idea is to get your console treated as a New Zealand console so the game unlocks on New Zealand's schedule.

On Xbox: changing your region

On Xbox, you can change your console's location to New Zealand under Settings > System > Language & location. BGR reports this as an Xbox method for GTA 6. It isn't confirmed for GTA 6 by Rockstar or Microsoft, so nobody will know for sure until launch night.

The catches:

You may be stuck there. BGR reports Microsoft limits region changes to once every three months, so you may not be able to switch back straight away.
Your store changes. Prices, currency and some payment options change with the region.
Some account types can't change. BGR notes the change can be blocked for some accounts, including ones New Zealand law would treat as a minor's.

On PS5: a separate New Zealand account

PlayStation accounts are tied to the country you chose when you made them, and you can't change it. VICE reports the only route is a separate New Zealand PSN account with a copy bought from the New Zealand store. That means paying for GTA 6 twice, usually with New Zealand PlayStation Store credit, and losing that copy if you go back to your Australian account. A VPN doesn't change which store your account belongs to.

Is it worth it in Australia?

For most people, no. On Australia's east coast it gets you in two hours earlier, at 10pm instead of midnight. In Perth, where the Australian copy unlocks at 9pm anyway, it moves you to 7pm. Both methods break the normal link between your account and where you live, which can cause problems with purchases and support later, so we don't recommend them. If you're in Australia, you're already one of the first people in the world to play.

Physical copies, retailers and early delivery

Physical copies won't get you in early. Rockstar says GTA 6's physical edition contains a download code, not a disc, and it goes on sale from November 12 so buyers can preload. Even if your copy arrives days before launch, the code downloads a game that stays locked until the release time.

That's the main reason the old "street date break" approach doesn't apply here: there's no disc to play offline. If a disc version is announced later, we'll update this section.

What about reviewers and media?

Reviewers usually get early copies, and GTA 6 appears to be no different. Insider Gaming reports, based on leaker NateTheHate, that review code went out in late October and that reviews go live on November 18. Rockstar hasn't confirmed either. Media access isn't available to normal players, and anyone claiming to sell a "press copy" is lying. If you're avoiding spoilers, be careful online from November 18. GTA 6 early access scams to ignore

GTA 6 is a magnet for scams. TechRadar reported in June 2026 that security firms Malwarebytes and NordVPN had found sites selling "VIP early access" and "beta keys", some charging hundreds of dollars in cryptocurrency. Others push fake downloads, including a file called "GTA Mobile 6" that reportedly contains remote-access malware. GTA Intel has also flagged a fake "113GB GTA 6 ISO" that's malware.

Treat all of these as scams:

GTA 6 "early access" keys, beta invites or press codes for sale
Any GTA 6 download for PC, Android or iPhone. There's no announced version for any of them (see GTA 6 on PC)
Sites asking for your Rockstar, PlayStation or Microsoft login to "unlock" anything

The only real places to buy GTA 6 are the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Store and normal retailers. If you've already entered details on a fake site, change your passwords and call your bank.

GTA 6 early access FAQ

Where does GTA 6 come out first? New Zealand, at 12am NZDT on November 19, 2026. Australia is next, two hours later on the east coast.

Can I play GTA 6 on November 18? In Australia, yes, if you're outside the AEDT states. Perth (9pm), Darwin (10:30pm), Brisbane (11pm) and Adelaide (11:30pm) all unlock on the evening of November 18 local time.

Will changing my PS5 or Xbox time zone unlock it? No. The unlock follows the store region's release time, not your console's clock.

Is GTA 6 early access coming for GTA+ members? Nothing like that has been announced. GTA+ comes with digital pre-orders as a one-month bonus, and Rockstar hasn't linked it to early play.
