How Long Is GTA 6? Story Length, Missions & 100% Completion Explained

Rockstar hasn't announced how long GTA 6 is. The most reliable clue so far is about 80 hours: that's how long Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson took to finish a playthrough in February 2026, according to The New York Times. His run covered the whole campaign plus some optional goals, so it isn't a pure story length, and it isn't an official figure.

The 80-hour figure, explained

In a preview published on August 27, 2026, The New York Times reported that Rob Nelson played through GTA 6 in February 2026 and that it took him about 80 hours. GamesRadar and VICE both relayed the report the same day.

What it includes

According to the reports, Nelson's run covered the entire campaign along with "some optional goals with narrative ramifications": optional content that affects the story. It was one person's playthrough of a build from about nine months before launch.

What it doesn't tell you

  • It isn't a main-story-only time. Optional story content is included, so a player who sticks to the main missions could finish faster.
  • It isn't a 100% time. Nelson didn't describe doing everything, and GTA 100% runs have always taken far longer than the story.
  • It isn't an average. One developer's pace tells you little about yours. A developer knows where everything is, but may also linger to test things.
  • It isn't official. Rockstar hasn't put a number on the campaign anywhere.

Some sites have turned this into "GTA 6 is 80 hours long". The accurate version is: one Rockstar North lead finished the campaign plus some optional content in about 80 hours.

How long is GTA 5? The best comparison

GTA V is Rockstar's last mainline GTA, so it's the natural baseline. Its story has 69 missions, and players report these average times on HowLongToBeat:

  • Main story: about 31.5 hours
  • 100% completion: about 79 hours (story mode only, not GTA Online)

GTA V's 100% checklist went far beyond the story: Strangers and Freaks side missions, random events, hobbies and pastimes, and collectibles all counted.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 vs Red Dead Redemption 2

Game Main story Bigger runs Story missions Source
GTA V About 31.5 hours About 79 hours for 100% 69 HowLongToBeat (via TheGamer); Sportskeeda
Red Dead Redemption 2 About 50 hours 80+ hours with side content; up to about 182 hours for everything 6 chapters and 2 epilogues HowLongToBeat (via Dexerto)
GTA VI Not announced One developer's campaign-plus-optional run: about 80 hours Not announced The New York Times, via GamesRadar and VICE

Read the GTA VI row carefully. It isn't measured the same way as the other two, which are averages from thousands of players. What it does suggest is that GTA 6's campaign, with some optional content, is in the same territory as Red Dead Redemption 2 rather than GTA V.

How many missions are in GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn't revealed a mission count, and it hasn't officially named any story missions yet. Trailers, the Netflix Extended Look and press previews have shown story sequences, including a high-rise job with several escape routes, but none comes with an official name or number. Any exact GTA 6 mission count you see before launch is a guess or a leak.

We're tracking what's been shown in every confirmed GTA 6 mission so far, and the GTA 6 Story Guide will list every story mission once we've played and checked each one.

How the story is structured: chapters, Jason and Lucia

Rob Nelson told the French magazine Trois Couleurs that the game "is set over chapters", the structure Red Dead Redemption 2 used. He didn't say how many.

The story follows Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple in the state of Leonida. Rockstar describes it as an easy score that goes wrong, pulling the pair into a criminal conspiracy. From the previews and interviews so far:

  • You play as both. Nelson told IGN you can switch between them at will outside missions, and the one you leave carries on with their own routine.
  • They stay together for most of the story, and previews describe swapping between them during some missions.
  • Their relationship matters. Nelson told IGN that whether you've nurtured the relationship "will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out". The romance itself is optional. We cover how Jason and Lucia's relationship works separately.

Story completion vs 100% completion

"Finishing GTA 6" can mean two very different things:

  • Story completion: the credits roll after the final story mission. This is what most people mean by "how long is GTA 6".
  • 100% completion: every story mission, side mission, activity and collectible the game tracks. In GTA V this took players more than twice as long as the story.

GTA 6's 100% checklist won't be known until the game is out. Our GTA 6 100% completion guide covers everything confirmed so far that's likely to count, and it'll become a full checklist after launch.

What will affect how long GTA 6 takes you

Some of the usual factors apply, like difficulty, skill and how much you explore. GTA 6 adds a few of its own, based on what Rockstar has said:

  • Money gates parts of the story. Nelson told IGN that money matters more than in previous GTA games, and that some missions need you to earn cash, through robberies, car boosting or selling stolen goods, before the story moves on.
  • Side activities are built into the flow. Nelson described robberies and other activities between story missions as "a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing".
  • Choices and the relationship. Small and big decisions add up, and the relationship changes how the story plays out, so a second playthrough may not be a repeat of the first.
  • Exploration is encouraged. Nelson said you get "the most out of the narrative" by spending time in the world, not rushing the missions.
  • Cheats won't speed up completion. In GTA V, cheat codes disabled trophies and achievements while active, and we'd expect GTA 6 to have similar rules. Our GTA 6 cheats page will cover them once they're known.

We won't put an exact number on GTA 6's story yet. Here's how we read the evidence:

  • Story-focused players will probably finish faster than Nelson's 80 hours, because his run included optional content. How much faster depends on how much of GTA 6's money-gated content is unavoidable.
  • Most players who mix story with side activities are likely to land around or above 80 hours, since a developer playing an unfinished build probably wasn't playing slowly.
  • 100% completion is likely to take well beyond 80 hours. In GTA V, 100% took about two and a half times as long as the story.

These are reasoned expectations, not predictions. We'll replace them with real data as soon as it exists.

How we'll measure GTA 6's real length after launch

  1. Reviews (reportedly due on November 18, not confirmed by Rockstar) usually say how long reviewers took to reach the credits.
  2. HowLongToBeat collects times from thousands of players and becomes reliable a few weeks after launch.
  3. Trophy and achievement lists show what Rockstar counts as completion.
  4. Our own Story Guide will count every story mission as we play it.

GTA 6 length FAQ

Is GTA 6 80 hours long? Not officially. About 80 hours is how long one Rockstar North lead took to finish the campaign plus some optional content in February 2026. Your time could be shorter or much longer.

Is GTA 6 longer than GTA 5? Very likely. GTA V's story averages about 31.5 hours, and Nelson's GTA 6 run took about 80 hours, though it included optional content.

How many missions are in GTA 6? Rockstar hasn't said, and no story missions have been officially named. GTA V had 69 story missions, but that tells you nothing certain about GTA 6.

How many chapters does GTA 6 have? Rockstar North says the story is told in chapters, but hasn't revealed how many.

How long will it take to 100% GTA 6? Unknown until the full checklist is out. Expect it to take much longer than the story alone.
